Asphalt: What Type Should You Choose?

Check Out These 3 Types of Asphalt Roofing!

When it comes to your home, it’s most likely your biggest investment. So, when your roof needs to be replaced or repaired, it is important to keep it in good shape and fix repairs quickly to protect your home. There are a variety of roofing materials to choose from and the options may cause you to feel overwhelmed. One of the most popular roofing materials, and a great choice for almost any home, includes asphalt shingles. This product is durable, available in a variety of colors and styles to match any home, and lasts for 20-30 years depending on how well you maintain it.
There are three types of asphalt shingles including 3-tab, dimensional, and luxury shingles. These three types are made of similar materials, but they are not the same.

3-tab Asphalt Shingles

3-tab asphalt shingles are one of the types of shingles available in the industry. These shingles are affordable and the most basic and economical product on the market. They are made from a fiberglass base mat that has been coated with mineral granules. This type of asphalt shingle is lightweight and designed to withstand the elements and can last 20-30 years depending on the conditions and maintenance. 3-tab shingles offer a clean, horizontal appearance and come in varying color tones. The product is notched into three tabs, giving this product a more decorative appearance.

Dimensional Asphalt Shingles

Dimensional shingles are strong and durable making them the most popular asphalt shingle used. They are composed of two or more layers of shingles, giving them a multi-dimensional texture and appearance and allowing them to be more durable. Dimensional shingles look great on all homes and are available in a wide range of colors to match any style of home. If you are looking for an asphalt shingle that will last 30 years or longer, dimensional shingles are perfect for your home.

Luxury Asphalt Shingles

Luxury asphalt shingles are designed to replicate natural slate and cedar shake roofs. At a more reasonable price, luxury shingles have a multi-dimensional appearance while maintaining a very durable product. This style is a great alternative for period-style homes. However, they have extra layers that bring extra weight which might not make them a good choice for your home. While they are laborious to install, the appearance is worth it.

  1. Thank you for talking about luxury asphalt shingles and how they can mimic the look of natural slate materials while still being a durable product. Since we’re planning a complete makeover for our house, this could be our opportunity to use better materials that can make our house sturdier overall. If I can find any roofers in the area that offer this material, I’ll hire them as part of our renovation team for sure.
